NANOQ LODGE

On Greenland’s arctic east coast, our lodge is surrounded by some of the wildest, least explored mountains, fjords and glaciers on earth.

EAST GREENLAND'S SKI AND EXPEDITION LODGE

A centre-point for skiers, climbers and adventurers

This is our home and the base for Pirhuk - Greenland Mountain Guides, a tight-knit partnership of skiers, climbers, dog sledders and paddlers. Our hand-built wooden lodge is located in the isolated Inuit village of Kulusuk, a community of 200 to which we’re privileged to belong. We have direct access to a wild coastline that extends many hundreds of kilometres to the north and south. Small groups join us throughout the year to share our passion for the mountains and ocean whilst experiencing life here, from char-fishing and salmon-smoking, to collecting berries, watching humpbacks feeding off the headland or staying up for the Aurora Borealis. Through the seasons, whether on skis, foot, by dog sled, boat or kayak, we set out each day to explore.

ABOUT OUR LODGE

Heavily insulated against the cold of winter, we’ve built the lodge around the needs of folk heading into the mountains and fjords each day, from short trips to long expeditions. Our intention is that this is not a 'luxury ski lodge’ but a comfortable and practical base from which to access this extremely wild coastline and experience life here in East Greenland.

We provide accommodation for 15 in a mix of sleeping lofts, twin and triple rooms (fresh linen is provided). Looking out over the fjord and mountains of Apusiaajik, the dining area and sitting room provide plenty of space to relax. Clean water is drawn from a nearby mountain lake and we are set up with hot showers and flushing toilets in shared bathrooms (a rare thing in this cold climate). You’re welcome to help us out, from feeding our sled dogs to clearing snow and preparing our boats and sleds. We have a store house for supplies and equipment, a drying room and a workshop. Throughout the day, one of us is on hand to manage weather forecasting, comms and logistics for the teams out in the wilds.

LOCATION

Nanoq Lodge is located in the small Tunuumi village of Kulusuk with direct access to the mountains and fjords.

Air Iceland Connect provides a regular flight into Kulusuk from Reykjavik, Iceland, a journey of around 1 hour 40 minutes.  The gravel/snow airstrip is a 30-minute walk or ski across the tundra from the lodge.  Kit is transported by ATV or snowmobile.

In summer, we can climb, hike and kayak within minutes of the lodge.  During the months of June to November, when ice conditions allow boat travel, sheltered routes avoiding the open ocean lead directly into the massive inland mountain ranges. In the cold season, we are surrounded by countless brilliant ski tours. Extensive sea ice enables travel by dog sled and snowmobile whilst it’s also often possible to haul our boats to the ice edge and access the open waters of Ammassalik Fjord (that almost never freeze over).
