Expedition Itinerary

Please note that this is an example itinerary.  The actual expedition may differ from that described below due to unforeseen circumstances such as inclement weather, snow/ice conditions etc.

Day 1   Fly Reykjavik to Kulusuk, East Greenland  Flights are with Air Iceland.  A spectacular flight over the icebergs of the Denmark Straits, and great views of Greenland’s coast and the pack ice as we get closer.  Landing on the snow strip in amongst the mountains is quite an experience.  You will be met at the airport by your guide and taken to your accommodation in the village.  There will be time for a look around the village, and your guide will give you some briefings and information about the area, before preparing for our departure over the frozen fjords the following day.  Overnight in simple sleeping bag accommodation.

Day 2  Dog sled into Basecamp  Early morning, and the dogsleds are packed with all the equipment we will need for the expedition- there's no chance for re-supply, so everything needs to be double-checked.  Once that's done, the village is left behind as we head out over the frozen bay.  With the equipment on the sleds, we will be unencumbered to ski over the frozen sea ice, a metre seperating us from the icy seas.  Ascending from sea level, we'll climb up onto a heavily glaciated island.  We will be really close to the mountains at this point, so potential lines will be scoped, and with these in mind, a suitable basecamp site selected.  With the baggage packed, the Inuit hunters will leave us.  The next hours will be spent establishing basecamp, erecting both the big basecamp tent as well as the smaller ones used to sleep in.

Day 3-10   Skiing!  Surrounded by beautiful peaks, each day will begin after breakfast in the heated basecamp tent.  Skinning up the glacier, the IFGMA certified guide will look for the safest way to reach the summit.  Although summit heights seem modest (c. 1000m) in comparison to the European Alps, it's worth bearing in mind that the day starts near sea level, meaning ascents (and descents) more normally found in bigger ranges; make no mistake, these mountains are alpine in scale, the biggest difference being that many have never previously been ascended, let alone skiied.  Views from the area's summits extend across hundreds of kilometres of virgin mountains, glaciers, the Icecap and the frozen sea stretching into the distance.  Skins off, and the descent finishes back at basecamp!  After a day's skiing, the warm and comfortable basecamp makes for the perfect place to relax and enjoy the isolation and stunning scenery.  Spectacular sunsets (magnified by the huge white expanse of the Icecap) give way to typically starlit skies and the distinct chance to see the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights; the green, yellow and even red and purple waves of light that dance across the sky are indescribable.  A truly breath-taking end to the day

Day 11   Dog sleds back to the village  In the morning, the dog sleds will arrive.  Once basecamp is packed up and loaded, we'll head for the village, descending off the glacier, then skinning across the frozen fjords.  Our final evening in Greenland will be spent in the simple but comfortable GES Basecamp where warm food (and showers!) await.

Day 12   Fly Kulusuk - Reykjavik, Iceland  Leaving the ice and snow of Greenland behind, your last night in Iceland will be spent in a central guesthouse/hotel, where both down-town Reykjavik and the naturally heated geo-thermal pools of the area are accessible- the perfect way to end the expedition!
